The eight-second time constant of short-term muscle memory hurts most golfers in another way. They spend too much time thinking as they prepare to strike their putts. 1 have timed many golfers both on course and in my schools and I ‘m always amazed to see that they usually stand over their putts for 20 to 30 seconds before starting their strokes. What arc they thinking about during these many seconds? Alignment posture grip stroke mechanics and who knows what else. They usually think about the mechanics of how they’re going to stroke this putt and about exactly where they are aimed. But while they stand there thinking they are losing the feel of their perfect practice stroke. In only eight seconds they’ve begun to forget the touch and stroke requirements they just created in their mind’s eye.

Don ‘t let this happen to you. Use your indoor practice time to turn your stroke mechanics into habit controlled automatically by your subconscious mind. Once this happens you are free from having to think about them before and during each putt on the course. That time can then be used for focusing on the feel and look of the size of your practice stroke as you judge its appropriateness for the upcoming putt. Once you feel and see what you believe to be the perfect practice stroke you have eight seconds to step up to the ball and stroke it exactly that way. Within that eight seconds you still have a vivid memory in your mind’s eye of how your “preview stroke” looks and feels so that’s how much time you have to do it again with the only difference that this time there happens to be a ball just ahead of the bottom of the stroke arc.

Putting within eight seconds of your last perfect practice stroke is not hard to do. Force yourself to make it a habit. This will not only help you develop better feel and touch for distance but will make putting under pressure easier because thinking is taken out of the equation.

Great putters don’t think their way through great putting strokes. Great putters make great strokes out of habit while they focus on the feel and size of the stroke they need to make.

5.7 Attitude

I strongly believe that your mind and your attitude play an important role in your putting success. Not that your mind can move the golf ball or that “positive thinking” can overcome a bad stroke. But if you have developed a reasonably good mechanical stroke as well as the ability to use that stroke without thinking about it then you can use your mind to focus on the touch and feel required to putt well. And a good attitude will let your body proceed with the work at hand with confidence.

The basic idea is to keep your conscious mind busy seeing your perfect stroke during your practice swings as a way to build your confidence and form a clear picture in your mind’s eye. Once you see and feel how you want to stroke your putt the trick becomes simply keeping your conscious mind busy and out of the way (for example thinking about your preshot ritual) so your subconscious can do its thing. 4.13 The Best Way to Putt

A quick review. The easiest way to roll balls at controlled speeds on your intended line is to use a True Roller. Mechanically the simplest way to swing a putter along your Aimline is to straddle the line and use a croquet-style putting stroke.

But the best legal way to putt is to take a perfectly fit putter and aim it accurately from a square setup with your feet knees hips shoulder and eye flow-lines aligned parallel-left of your Aimline; put your eyes vertically over the line and your hands vertically under your shoulders; then stroke your putt solidly on the sweetspot with a dead-hands pure-in-line stroke keeping your putterface square to the Aimline (Figure 4.13.1). First of all, it’s important that you realize that your grip will affect the results that you get. However, it’s not as complicated as the other systems make it out to be. First, grab the club with your right hand so the face of it is toward the target. Keep the face pointed toward the target, while placing your left hand on the bottom of the grip or handle. At this point you should be holding your left hand out flat, so that it is touching the bottom of the grip. Position the joint where your left pinky meets your palm directly underneath the handle of the club. Keep the pinky there and place the first joint in your left forefinger directly underneath the club. Now, do not lift your fingers up, bringing the grip of the club into your palm; instead, hold the handle steady with your left fingers and wrap your palm around the top of the grip. This is an important distinction. Again, don’t wrap the fingers towards the palm, but instead wrap your palm around the top of the club. Now, you should be able to easily place your left thumb directly on top of the club. This should form a V-shape where your left thumb and left forefinger meet. This V-shape should point directly to your right shoulder when it’s complete.
