And like any good or service that will cost money and require time, you should be careful before you buy.  Golf can be a really costly game to play and it is reasonable to assume that you have invested a fair amount of money in your equipment – golf clubs, golf bag, golf balls, golf clothing, golf cart etc; – therefore doesn’t it make common sense for you to learn how to use them to their advantage and improve your skills and capabilities?

The opening 5 Holes run alongside the River Wyre so be aware; a slice spells a watery grave when the tide is in. One of the finest views in the Fylde area can be seen from the 3rd tee. To the north is Morecambe Bay set against the background of the Lake District Mountains. On a very clear day to the Southwest, the high Mountains of Wales are also visible. One of the courses most infamous holes is the 11th hole 123yd par 3. At first glance this should pose few problems, however with water in front of and to the right of the green, out of bounds on both sides and to the rear of the green ‘mishaps’ often occur! When the wind is blowing this hole can vary from a sand iron to a 5 iron, the hole has ruined more promising good scores than any other hole.

Head Balance: Heel-Toe Weighting

There’s good news and bad news regarding the balance of a putterhead. The good news is that the more a putterhead is “heel-toe” balanced – more of its weight is placed toward the ends of the head – the less it twists when mis-hit. (In scientific terms such a putter is said to have a higher moment of inertia.) In general this is good and explains why heel-toe-balanced putters have sold well over the years: Putts hit away from the sweetspot roll a little closer to their intended speed and line. Of course no putter can make putts hit away from the sweetspot roll perfectly but the greater the heel-toe weight distribution the more forgiving the putter is on mis-hits.

Now the bad news. The less a putter twists when mis-hit the better it feels. That sounds good right? Well think about it. Using a putter that feels good even on mis-hits lets golfers get sloppy with their impact patterns which leads to long-term degradation of putting performance. I ‘ve seen many Tour players initially putt well with a heel-toe-balanced putter but then later begin to putt poorly and not know why. They were mis-hitting but didn’t realize it because the putter masked the feel of a mis-hit. When this begins they usually switch to a non-heeltoe-weighted putter until their stroke mechanics and results improve.

If they ask me what to do I offer slightly different advice. I think the advantages of heel-toe-weighted putters are significant and shouldn’t be given up. But I don ‘t want the pros developing a sloppy stroke so I suggest that they continue using a heel-toe-weighted putter on the course and when they practice use a device called the “Teacher Clip ” which trains your stroke to sweetspot contact (Figure 11.6.8). This combination helps keep impact patterns tight (more on this in section 12.3) while still being somewhat forgiving on the course.

As much as I like heel-toe weighting I won’t use a putter no matter how forgiving if it means sacrificing easy and accurate alignment (more about alignment in section 11.7). In the long run good putting means consistently striking putts on the sweetspot. Do that and you won’t have any problems with head balance or putter twisting. And that’s why you see as many Tour pros putting with non-heeltoe-balanced putters as putting with strongly heel-toe-balanced putters. Hit putts on the sweetspot and there is no difference.

The angle between your back and your hips should be great enough to provide room for your arms to swing with your hands vertically below your shoulders but small enough to let you comfortably practice putting at least 10 or 15 minutes at a time (Figure 4.10.4 middle photograph). Your knees should be slightly flexed enough to give you stability on windy days without making you feel crouched or uncomfortable.

The most comfortable and solid putting posture sets your center of mass (the center of your weight) over a spot between the balls of your feet as shown in Figure 4.10.5. Leaning too far forward so your weight gets out over your toes can cause severe inconsistencies in the impact point of your putts. Leaning too far back away from the ball places too much weight on your heels which leads to instability particularly in windy conditions again hindering solid and repeatable impact.

Eye Position

Once your posture is correct as described above position your eyes somewhere directly over the Aimline of your putt as discussed in section 4.4. Accomplish this by moving closer to or farther away from the ball – not by changing your back angle or leaning over or hack. Remember the Aimline extends behind the hall so it’s okay to set your eyes slightly behind the ball Jack Nicklaus – style (Figure 4.10.6).

One word of realism here: Positioning your eyes over your Aimline won’t make you aim perfectly but it will allow you to aim consistently. If you learn how to aim perfectly (in Chapter 11) by eliminating compensations for your stroke faults then consistently perfect aim will become automatic.
