Golf Swing Tips

To improve your golf game, it’s vital that you take golf lessons. Golf is a sport that is almost impossible to learn without some sort of guidance. Luckily, there are golf experts around the country whose job it is to teach golf. By taking golf lessons, you can drastically improve your game in a relatively short amount of time. Taking golf lessons can be an expensive, time-consuming effort. And like any good or service that will cost money and require time, you should be careful before you buy.  Golf can be a really costly game to play and it is reasonable to assume that you have invested a fair amount of money in your equipment – golf clubs, golf bag, golf balls, golf clothing, golf cart etc; – therefore doesn’t it make common sense for you to learn how to use them to their advantage and improve your skills and capabilities?

Dave Pelz’s Putting Bible – golf’s least understood skill.

Extract from the book:

Do you have trouble with severe downhill putts? Do you feel that no matter what you do the ball is going to roll past the cup possibly way past? I know two ways to take speed out of putts particularly on really fast downhillers.

The more common way to soften impact is to strike the ball out on the toe of the putter well away from the sweetspot. This technique will affect your putts in two ways. First your putts will roll with less than the normal amount of speed which is what you want. Second and what you don’t want is they will start slightly off-line because the putterface rotates open at impact (Figure 14.5.1). So while it’s good that they won’t roll too far past the hole you seldom make these putts.

A better way to remove power is to grip down the shaft of your putter to make it effectively shorter. For any given motion of your hands the shorter the shaft the less power is transmitted to the ball. Then still stroke the putts solidly on the sweetspot. This combination not only reduces the speed of your putts it also starts them online retaining your chance of holing the putt if you have read the green correctly.

Use this grip-down technique on “killer downhillers ” when you fear losing the

Face Your Special Problems 353 putt past the hole even if you stroke it as gently as you can. A good example of how to use this technique is illustrated by two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen (Figure 14.5.2). On the left Lee is holding his putter at normal length which you should do as you make your practice swings and preview stroke. When he steps into his final address position ready to start his ritual and putt (shown on the right) he grips down on his putter (the softer he wants to impact the putt the farther he grips down). This gives him the best stroke his touch and feel can create through his preview stroke plus the added benefit of using a slightly shorter putter to take that last little bit of power out of a really scary putt.

How much speed will a toe strike or gripping down take out? Only you can answer that and only by practicing on the actual slopes and greens you play. Again don’t use either of these techniques for normal downhill putts. You want to hit those solidly as close to the sweetspot as you can using your normal well-developed putting touch to control your putt ‘s speed.

The Long Drive Bible: How You Can Hit the Ball Longer, Straighter, and More Consistently

Extract from the book:

We are nearly at the simple end of the USGA-approved putting techniques. And it’s here that you encounter the long-putter method which is probably one option the ruling body would like to outlaw. But as long as it remains legal I suggest you give it a try (if for no other reason than to experience the feel and vision of a true pendulum motion). Because when done properly the long putter creates a wonderfully simple stroke (as demonstrated by Sam Torrance of the European Tour on the left side of Figure 3.5.1 1).

The solid shaft of the long putter eliminates any chance of wrist hinge or breakdown and minimizes the tendency to rotate the putterface with your forearms. I’ve tested thousands of students in my Scoring Game Schools and found that the majority of them make more putts of six feet or less with a long putter than when putting any other way including the conventional way. It is a very simple way to putt especially on short putts.

My tests also show that the long putter hanging vertically (from under the chin) is marginally more effective than the long putter anchored against the chest (right side of Figure 3.5.11) and better than the midlength putter anchored below the chest. But all three of these options because they employ a longer-thannormal-length shaft eliminate the problem of wrist breakdown that hampers many golfers.

The negatives of putting with a long putter are learning to roll putts the right distance (it requires learning new feel and touch for distance) and occasional instability in windy conditions. However both problems can be handled with a little practice leading me to believe they aren’t inherent problems but caused by a lack of experience.

50 Methods of Putting

The Pure Pendulum Stroke And that brings us to the simplest easiest most repeatable most reliable and therefore best way to putt – the pure no-hit pendulum stroke. By this I mean a putter swinging in rhythm with the arms and hands with no power input from the hands and wrists whatsoever. If the pendulum is pure and swings down the line with no face rotation it is as simple a motion as can be made under the Rules of Golf. And that’s why it is the method I recommend most often to my students. And I recommend it to you.

To see it in use watch George Archer on the Senior PGA Tour who has produced the purest and best pendulum stroke for the longest period of time of anyone I’ve ever seen (Figure 3.5.12). Over a 20-year period playing against Nicklaus Palmer Player Watson Crenshaw Ballesteros Faldo and Norman Archer holed a higher percentage of his putts than all the rest.

Now that you have the proper grip with your left hand, we can focus on the right hand. Take your right hand and place it underneath the handle of the club. Lift up your left forefinger from underneath the club so it can move freely. Interlock your right picky with your left forefinger.
