And like any good or service that will cost money and require time, you should be careful before you buy.  Golf can be a really costly game to play and it is reasonable to assume that you have invested a fair amount of money in your equipment – golf clubs, golf bag, golf balls, golf clothing, golf cart etc; – therefore doesn’t it make common sense for you to learn how to use them to their advantage and improve your skills and capabilities?

Welcome to the Hurst Golf Club members pages with information and news about players, competitons and our social calendar. The 9 hole course at Hurst plays host to a lively and enthusiastic membership base which includes Men’s, Ladies, Seniors and Juniors teams. Hurst Golf Course is set in the beautiful Berkshire countryside adjacent to Dinton Pastures waterways. The Club enjoys some shared facilities with the local sailing club and as you can immagine, water is a feature of the Hurst Golf Course.

You probably could he pushed to agree that it is reasonable to expect golf halls rolling on smooth fast low-friction surfaces (such as a desktop) to be blown sideways by wind. Prove it to yourself by running the “desk wind test ” shown in Figure 9.4.1. Roll a golf ball across your desktop five times to get the feel of where the ball rolls on its own. Then roll it five more times blowing on the ball from the side each time as it passes your face. On at least one of the rolls you’ll hit the ball with your exhaled breath (you’ll miss above or below a few times too) and see it pushed off-line. Once you get the hang of hitting the ball with your breath you can prove to yourself that winds with against and quartering across the line of the rolling ball can have an effect too (Figure 9.4.2).

In the examples and figures above my breath wind speed was about 10 miles per hour which shows that even a relatively low-velocity wind influences the roll of the ball dramatically on a low-friction surface. So what does that mean for your putting on fast and slow greens?

To help you understand what really happens to a ball rolling on a flat putting green surface look at Figure 9.4.3. You can see the forces that control the motion of the ball and a simple evaluation of the strength of those forces will tell you where the ball is going to go.

On a windless day a putt rolls forward with the momentum you provided by putting it. As it rolls toward the hole friction against the green surface and air resistance (which is small but does count) slows it down. On a flat green there is no force pushing the ball sideways no downhill component of gravity and no force preventing it from being pushed sideways.

Now look at what happens in the wind (Figure 9.4.4). The ball is rolling toward you (out of the page); there is a side-wind force but no force in opposition except the very small force of rolling friction. This explains why wind can significantly affect your putting results without you even realizing it.

Is one part of feel more important than any other? I don’t know. But more to the point I’m not sure I care. Because I do know that all these factors are necessary for good putting and the end result feel ultimately is experiential. You’ve got to do it lots of times to learn it and know it.

Feel is knowing how to do it touch is knowing what to do. A golfer with good touch can have a had day physically when his body simply can ‘t execute what his brain knows he should do. On a day like this we’d say his feel is off. This golfer will be frustrated because he doesn’t seem to be able to do what he knows he can and needs to do. Compare that to a golfer with poor touch: He can have great feel and still never make a putt because if you choose the wrong speed yet roll it perfectly at that speed the results still won ‘t be very good. So poor-touch golfers are more likely to get bewildered than frustrated (Figure 5.2.1).

5.3 Realities of Touch and Feel

Adrenaline Effects

Since touch and feel both reside in the brain and the brain travels with a golfer’s body it would be logical to assume that both touch and feel would transfer easily from the practice green to the course. Sorry but that is not the case. In fact transferring them to the course is often one of the most difficult aspects of the game for golfers at all skill levels (this is true for the short game as well as putting and as you ‘ll see for the same reason). When a golfer feels excited anxious scared or is under any kind of pressure his heart beats faster and his body produces adrenaline which causes the muscles to get stronger. This can happen on the first tee over a two-foot putt to win the Saturday nassau or on the final hole of the U.S. Open. In all these situations pressure means stronger muscles. And stronger muscles are certain to affect your putting results if it is your muscles that are determining how far and fast your putts roll.

What happens when you practice putting? The heart doesn ‘t beat faster you are not excited and adrenaline isn ‘t produced. No adrenaline because no matter how hard you practice or how much you concentrate on the practice green by it’s very nature practice is repetitive and boring. Deep inside you know that the results don’t matter. You can pretend that this five-footer is to win The Masters but you can ‘t fool your subconscious. If you want to put a little pressure and excitement into your practice sessions either compete with a friend for more money than you can afford to lose or when practicing alone tell yourself (and then live by it) that you can’t quit until you achieve some specific goal such as holing 10 three-footers in a row. We call this “a closer ” and I highly recommend it. (More about it in Chapter 13.)

This is the final setup position. The back is still straight. All you need to do is bend at the waist until the club touches the ground. As you can see, the arms are still stretched out, and the hands are hanging straight down from the shoulders. They seem lower than waist-level, but the relationship between the arms and chest has not changed. Your legs remain in a fixed position, while you move the arms and chest together to the ball. This is the key to a good, simple setup.
