Hillingdon Golf Club, founded in 1892, is the third oldest golf club, and the oldest 9 hole golf club, in Middlesex. Located between Vine Lane, Hillingdon Hill and RAF Uxbridge, the course, which features many ancient oak trees, is set in 28 acres of mature parkland that was once part of the old Hillingdon Manor Estate. At 5490 yards, with a par of 68 and 18 separate tees, the course is bounded in part by the River Penn, which comes into play on 3 of the 9 holes.

Putting within eight seconds of your last perfect practice stroke is not hard to do. Force yourself to make it a habit. This will not only help you develop better feel and touch for distance but will make putting under pressure easier because thinking is taken out of the equation.

Great putters don’t think their way through great putting strokes. Great putters make great strokes out of habit while they focus on the feel and size of the stroke they need to make.

5.7 Attitude

I strongly believe that your mind and your attitude play an important role in your putting success. Not that your mind can move the golf ball or that “positive thinking” can overcome a bad stroke. But if you have developed a reasonably good mechanical stroke as well as the ability to use that stroke without thinking about it then you can use your mind to focus on the touch and feel required to putt well. And a good attitude will let your body proceed with the work at hand with confidence.

Experience is required both to learn good feel and touch and the confidence to fully use it. You cannot learn confidence from a book or videotape although both can teach you how to learn it. Once you learn the size of the stroke that you need and how it feels to make it then all it takes is practice to learn to move from the preview stroke to the real stroke in a timely manner. If you have learned to do this and practiced it a lot you’ll develop a quiet understanding a confidence a calm and a focus that allow you to concentrate on the meaningful and controllable aspects of feel and touch.

And your mind is important because it controls all of the above. It controls how you move your body and how you move your body controls your putter and how your putts start rolling. Your mind orchestrates the symphony – the motions the rhythm and the sequence of those motions – it controls the complete motion of the putting stroke. If you use positive self talk – something like “Okay now let’s make this the most beautiful rhythmic and smooth stroke we’ve ever seen” – before you prepare to putt and then maintain the presence of mind to prepare properly (making and judging a proper practice stroke then focusing on repeating it) your mind will allow you to execute the best stroke you know how to make. This is how a confident (positive) attitude helps a golfer putt better.

Proper putter fitting is not fundamentally a part of putting stroke mechanics but there’s no doubt that it can help you make better strokes. If the length or lie of a putter is wrong for you you’ll be forced to make compensations in order to putt at all well (Figure 4.11.1). And every characteristic of your putter that is poorly fit to your body size shape setup posture or alignment is one more card stacked against the odds of your executing a pure accurate smooth and noncompensating stroke.

The truth is that most golfers change their strokes to fit their putters when they should be changing their putters to fit their strokes (Figure 4.11.2). They don’t do much in the way of putter fitting in some cases because all they’ve been told about choosing a putter is to use one that they like the looks of. In other instances golfers use whatever putter has been given to them.

You should never change from your proper eye position stance or posture to accommodate a poorly fit putter.

My belief is that you need to be fit for a putter before you waste too much time trying to work around a bad one. You may or may not end up changing it later but at least you can make some good improvements until you decide. The details of fitting a putter to your body and stroke will be discussed in section 11.6.

4.12 The Mind’s Role in Putting Stroke Mechanics

There is one last ingredient I ‘ve yet to touch on in this long list of putting factors. And that is the mind. How important is the mind when putting? You can’t move the golf ball even 1/32 of an inch with just your mind. Your mind doesn’t hold the putter. However that doesn’t mean the mind has no power because the mind can stop your body from accomplishing something in a heartbeat. Your mind must believe you can make a putt at least that the possibility exists . . . or you won’t. You must realize that of course you “can” make the putt. It really is possible. Always remember what one of my favorite putters in the whole world (Dave Stockton) said to me: “I never met a putt I couldn’t make.”

This is a different view of the complete follow through. Your forearms are crossed, and that is the sign that you have completed the follow-through correctly Keep your head perfectly still during the entire swing This is the last crucial step that you must master. It’s by far the easiest step, but ironically it will produce the most results. The biggest problem is that you don’t always know when you are moving your head.
