11.2 Build Your Routine

To hit golf shots consistently you must be consistent in what you do before you hit your shots. This is especially true in putting where the margins of error for accuracy and precision are so very small.

The preshot routine for putting is the procedure you go through before every putt to properly prepare yourself to execute the perfect ritual and stroke. This routine of preparation starts immediately after you have decided what you are going to do (by reading the green) and prepares both your mind and body for how you are going to do it. Please note: Don’t confuse the term “routine” (which refers to preparing to stroke a putt) with the term “ritual” (which when talking about your preshot procedure is actually part of the execution of your putting stroke as you’ll see later in this chapter).

The putting routine is different from the routine I recommend for the short game which includes decisions relating to the lie of the ball in the grass green conditions hazards and the management decisions made while weighing one shot against another. In putting everything that precedes the preparation routine is included in your green-reading process which I will deal with in section 13.3.

A Five-Step Routine

Assume you have walked off your putt distance finished reading the green and decided to play your putt dead-straight into the cup. It is now time to start your routine. In position – standing directly behind your ball on your selected Aimline – I recommend you build a routine that includes the following steps:

Before you can develop a good feel for a putt you need to have a good idea for how long it is and how much power will be required to roll it the proper speed and distance: In other words you need to have touch. Given that feel for the putt involves having a good idea of how to apply the power which will be needed to roll the ball at the optimum speed along that line to allow it to break into the hole. Having good feel for a putt is having the idea or picture in your mind’s eye of how the stroke will look and feel in both rhythm and intensity as it rolls the ball to the hole. So a part of feel is in your head. Feel also involves a kinesthetic awareness for the violence (or nonviolence) of your swing and knowing the physical sensation to expect at impact including the vibrations that will travel up the shaft after the putter strikes the ball. It is based on the feel of your collected experience from thousands of swings you’ve made on previous putts and the results they produced. This feel is produced in your nerve endings fingers arms and shoulders in the muscles of all of these entities as well as in your brain and memory.

Is one part of feel more important than any other? I don’t know. But more to the point I’m not sure I care. Because I do know that all these factors are necessary for good putting and the end result feel ultimately is experiential. You’ve got to do it lots of times to learn it and know it.

Feel is knowing how to do it touch is knowing what to do. A golfer with good touch can have a had day physically when his body simply can ‘t execute what his brain knows he should do. On a day like this we’d say his feel is off. This golfer will be frustrated because he doesn’t seem to be able to do what he knows he can and needs to do. Compare that to a golfer with poor touch: He can have great feel and still never make a putt because if you choose the wrong speed yet roll it perfectly at that speed the results still won ‘t be very good. So poor-touch golfers are more likely to get bewildered than frustrated (Figure 5.2.1).

5.3 Realities of Touch and Feel

Adrenaline Effects

Since touch and feel both reside in the brain and the brain travels with a golfer’s body it would be logical to assume that both touch and feel would transfer easily from the practice green to the course. Sorry but that is not the case. In fact transferring them to the course is often one of the most difficult aspects of the game for golfers at all skill levels (this is true for the short game as well as putting and as you ‘ll see for the same reason). When a golfer feels excited anxious scared or is under any kind of pressure his heart beats faster and his body produces adrenaline which causes the muscles to get stronger. This can happen on the first tee over a two-foot putt to win the Saturday nassau or on the final hole of the U.S. Open. In all these situations pressure means stronger muscles. And stronger muscles are certain to affect your putting results if it is your muscles that are determining how far and fast your putts roll.

Notice that the left elbow is still locked at this point. The elbow is just crossing the imaginary line that you have created between your eyes and your belly button. Remember, try to stop your elbow at this point. This is the point where your wrists will start to flip through the ball.Also notice the angle between the left arm and the club shaft is almost the same as it was at setup.
