Alnmouth Golf Club overlooks the splendors of both Foxton and Alnmouth Bay. It is widely regarded as one of the finest golf courses in the North East of England. Alnmouth Golf Club (the fourth oldest golf club in England) was formed in 1869, with a nine-hole course on the links at Alnmouth Village.The famous golf course architect H. S. Colt (the designer of Wentworth, Sunningdale and Pine Valley) was commissioned to create the present course for the Duke of Northumberland in 1930. Although the course has a coastal location it has parkland turf and a reputation for the fine quality of the greens.

5.6 Two Types of Muscle Memory

If you ever learned how to ride a bicycle even if it was 30 years ago you will never forget the feeling of how to ride. You may be a little rusty and momentarily forget how to balance your body on the bike but in just a few moments you can ride away almost as if you’d never stopped. This is a good example of long-term muscle memory which is stored in your brain and never forgotten.

Everyone has a second kind of muscle memory called short term – thoughts and sensations that disappear from our bodies and minds at a rate of about 30 percent every eight seconds. Say someone pinches you on the arm: You feel the pinch and it hurts. But it hurts only for a little while the pain fades away and in almost no time the pain is gone and you feel better. The memory of how badly you hurt or what the hurt actually felt like fades quickly. In eight seconds about one third of the feeling is lost. In the next eight seconds another third of what is left goes and on and on until there is nothing left to feel. Most humans operate with this same eight-second clock so it is called the “time constant” of short-term memory. It is also a good measure of your loss of kinesthetic awareness involved in the feel of your golf swing or putting stroke.

Both long- and short-term muscle memories are important in putting. Once you learn and know the feeling of your perfect putting stroke it will reside in your long-term memory and never totally be forgotten. You may not be able to produce it at will immediately after a long layoff but with a little work you’ll do it and just as important you will recognize it. The memories of the good stroke will come flooding hack just the way they do when hopping on a bicycle after a long layoff. That’s the good news.

The bad news is that the short-term feel for your putting stroke motion is subject to the short-term time constant of eight seconds. When does this come into play? As you are learning and practicing putting touch and on the course as you make practice strokes in preparation for the real one.

To see it in use watch George Archer on the Senior PGA Tour who has produced the purest and best pendulum stroke for the longest period of time of anyone I’ve ever seen (Figure 3.5.12). Over a 20-year period playing against Nicklaus Palmer Player Watson Crenshaw Ballesteros Faldo and Norman Archer holed a higher percentage of his putts than all the rest.

The list of others who make pure-pendulum strokes reads like a who’s who of great putters including Bob Charles Greg Norman Dave Stockton Andy North Loren Roberts and Phil Mickelson (Figure 3.5.13). Having now looked at these great putters and seeing how simple their strokes are doesn’t it make you want to start putting that way? If it does you are reading the right book because my Putting Bible is mostly about why what and how to do it!

Back to what 1 said at the beginning of this chapter: Simpler is better. Because the mechanics of a pendulum motion get the job done and because they are the simplest then they must be the best. And they are the best because they are easier to learn and master than any of the more complex motions.

But be careful because there is not just one single pendulum motion. A pendulum stroke can be swung down the line around the body or across the line. It can be swung with the face rotating or with the face kept square. It can be pushed or pulled or allowed to swing in a consistent natural rhythm.

The best of all these is the simplest of the simple the pure-in-line vertically swinging face-always-square natural-rhythm pendulum. It is the way to go if you want to putt your most consistently and most successfully.

I know it took a little time to get through all the possible strokes from the hardest to the easiest. But it is important that you understand the big picture of putting. It will help if you want to putt your best because at some point in your putting practice you’re going to doubt that what you’re doing is right that what you’re doing is working. And that’s when you’re going to fall back on the knowledge imparted here that to putt your best you must commit to the simplest stroke that will work for you and then believe in it. Come hell or high water – or missing 20 putts in a row – you must believe in the stroke you have committed to and stay with it until you groove it and own it. Only then can you ever hope to move toward achieving your personal optimum putting performances.

The chest and shoulders shouldn’t be turning, unless your arms are turning with them. In other words, you want to start your swing with a shoulder turn, but your arms should start swinging at EXACTLY the same time. They are an extension. They are connected. Furthermore, your arms shouldn’t be swinging unless your chest is rotating. Don’t start swinging your arms without starting the shoulder turn. They are connected. Your left elbow remains locked throughout the entire swing. When you complete your shoulder turn, your arms should stop as well. The goal will be to have your left arm exactly parallel to the ground. Your elbow is still locked. When it gets there…STOP. Do not continue to swing your arms.
