Airport Pick Up: Faro Airport is the main international airport of the Algarve and southern Portugal. The airport is located 7km to the south-west of Faro city and is just outside the city limits. Considering that Faro airport is the major gateway to southern Portugal, there is very limited public transport that departs directly from the terminals of the airport. This guide will provide details on how to travel from Faro airport to the Faro bus station, train station and city centre by public transport.

Airport Pick Up: The bus journey takes only 15 minutes, but as the bus route connects Faro to the best beach of the region, the bus can get very crowded towards the end of the day. As of the summer 2017, there are 26 daily bus departures from the airport, with the first service at 5:20am and the last service at 00:10am (midnight). The published timetable is displayed at the bus stop. There are departures every 30-50 minutes, and the latest timetable can be seen on the Proximo website at:

Honma Golf Clubs: Japanese company noted for its high-end irons and played by many players in Asia.

The existing terminal 2, named the Ruiz Picasso Terminal was finalised in November 1991 after the famous artist Pablo Picasso whose birthplace was Malaga.  It connected the old terminal 1 and by 1995 included a huge car park building which included an area for hire cars.

Airport Pick Up: Being just 8km from the city, Palma Airport is quite accessible, reducing your hustle of getting from the airport to the hotel room. There is public transport in the form of buses and taxis from the airport to the city. Several car hire companies such as Hertz and Avis offer rent-a-car services from Palma Airport for those who opt for the luxury of a hired vehicle.

From Jack Montgomeries book The Real Tenerife: Head into the Noria District which runs from the foot of the landmark grey stone tower of the Iglesia de La Concepción to find many of the city’s newest and coolest bars where live bands feature on summer weekends and you can drink until 2 or 3am. After that, head over to the area around Parque Marítimo near the auditorium for the golf clubs. If you’re in the city in July, don’t miss the excellent Santa Blues festival which features top US Blues artists beneath the flamboyance trees in Plaza Concepción.

Airport Pick Up: Murcia airport is about 35 minutes drive from the city centre. You can rent a car here, or take a bus to get to Murcia city. As ever, I highly recommend Blacklane (read the review) if you want to hire a car with a driver. Use my discount code,  8QGSZNQL, to get £10/$10/€10 off your first booking.

One of the best things about Murcia is how well placed the city is to explore the rest of the region. The beaches at Mar Menor are about a thirty minute drive, and in fifteen minutes you can be in El Valle national park. Murcia is ideal if you want to combine all the bars, food, and culture of a city break with a little bit of nature or action.

From Jack Montgomeries book The Real Tenerife: This is the wind surfing and kiteboarding capital of Tenerife; if it’s got anything to do with riding waves, you can hire it, learn it, wear it and buy it here. With up to 290 days of wind a year and sea temperatures that hover around the high 60°s, you can surf your way through the calendar. Equipment hire is around €35 per day and lessons start from around €30 a session including equipment.

From Jack Montgomeries book The Real Tenerife: Las Galletas has a pleasant, sheltered, sand and pebble beach where the lack of sun loungers for hire ensures it’s never too busy. There are no facilities or lifeguard but you’re only a stroll away from the promenade’s restaurants and ice cream parlours. At the other end of the promenade is a second, smaller beach favoured by locals where you can snooze away your post lunch drowsiness undisturbed by the sound of traffic.

From Jack Montgomeries book The Real Tenerife: In the far west of the island, you can drive through a tunnel and emerge in an entirely different climatic zone, sometimes moving from dense cloud to unbroken blue skies. Walking Tenerife’s myriad of paths enables you to clearly see and feel changes in vegetation and air temperature as you cross climate zones from humid to arid and from coast to pine forest.

Airport Pick Up: Malaga airport. Costa del Sol airport is the 4th busiest airport in Spain, in fact, it is used by more than 12 million passengers every year.

Airport Pick Up: The Malaga–Fuengirola railway line also runs through the airports railway station built in 2010, providing an excellent link to many of the coasts holiday resorts and providing a direct link between Malaga City and bustling Malaga-Marbella Airport.

From Jack Montgomeries book The Real Tenerife: Fiercely protective of their heritage, Tinerfeños of every age know the words to their traditional songs, the steps to their traditional dances and own a ‘mago’ or traditional costume. Far from shunning old, outdated ideas, it’s predominantly the young who participate in the fiestas which commemorate, celebrate and preserve their heritage, finding any excuse to don the costume and roam the streets amidst traditional bands of ‘Parrandas’. Go along to a teenage party and you’re just as likely to hear Los Sabandeños as Muse. In the bars and golf clubs it’s not UK and US chart sounds that dominate, it’s Cuban hip hop, Reggaeton and Latino, an audible link to Tenerife’s Latin American pulse which has been 400 years in the making and which beats its way through the food, the music, the language and of course, Carnaval.

Speaking of bikes, you can rent them from several hire companies in Alicante, including Blue Bike Rental & Tours. Bike hire includes a map with local routes and tips, a lock and lights, and you can even arrange for your bike to be delivered to your hotel. The company also runs guided tours with a beer and tapas included.

From Jack Montgomeries book The Real Tenerife: A few quiet bars and no golf clubs, but with 80 fiestas, short film seasons, jazz weekends, world music festivals and cinema on the beach taking place throughout the year, who needs them?

Airport Pick Up: Car rental: All major car rental companies service Lisbon Airport and offices are located within the Terminal 1 arrival hall. It is worth noting that the rental car park is located on the busiest road in Lisbon and drivers should be comfortable with their vehicle before exiting this area. For tourists holidaying within the Lisbon region a rental car is not necessary as public transport is inexpensive and convenient.

For visitors in a hurry, taxi provides the fastest means of transport but drivers have a reputation for overcharging unsuspecting tourists. All fares should be based on the meter reading but some drivers insist on a set fare. If the driver insists on a set fee make sure this is agreed at the outset. For tourists seeking transport for distances beyond Lisbon, it is advisable to pre-book transfers as taxi journeys can get very expensive.

From Jack Montgomeries book The Real Tenerife: Away from the resorts too, very few people speak any English at all and there are sparse concessions to tourism, even though it’s now the Island’s number one income generator. Life in rural communities is hard. Narrow terraces still have to be tilled by hand and younger generations are seeking easier ways of making money by heading to the coastal tourist towns. As a result, many terraces are left to go fallow, adding dry brush to fuel the not uncommon forest fires.

From Jack Montgomeries book The Real Tenerife: The main hub of bars and golf clubs are located in the San Eugenio area; these are aimed at people who want familiar environments and on tap entertainment when they go abroad; any number of interchangeable Irish, Scottish, English, karaoke and sports bars are the order of the day. San Eugene’s is a fun venue for people in holiday party mode and there are some decent live music bars with excellent bands like the talentedSoundchaser who currently play at Harley’s and the In & Out Bar.

This steadily increased to 10 million in 1986 necessitating the installation of another terminal. The construction of this terminal begun in 1993 and ended in 1997.
